PEA SOUP FOG this morning, as we pulled anchor and left the
Alligator River.
We used
everything we had – motor, autohelm, compass, radar, chartplotter, automatic
identification system, binoculars (visibility about 50 feet), depth sounder,
wind vane for speed and direction, GPS and paddle-wheel speed logs, barometer, coffee,
and follow-any-lead-boat (when we could spot it). Everything except the sails …

helm.
The fog lifted after about an hour of IFR (instrument flight
rules). Once we left the wider
river – after an hour or so – we could steer through the Alligator-Pungo Canal
by watching the banks on either side.
So, we made it to our hurricane safe haven today.
