It's named for the Seewee tribe of Native Americans - about 100 of them (really a large family rather than a tribe). They were here when the HMS Carolina arrived, the first ship from England to Carolina. After trading with the non-native Americans, they decided to cut out the middlemen and trade directly with the king of England. The able-bodied men tried to take their goods by canoe to England - but only made it a little way out into the Atlantic Ocean before they were wiped out in a storm. The survivors (women, the old and the young, who stayed on shore) were subsequently taken into slavery and moved to the Caribbean where they died of diseases. True story - we read it on the menu!
