BACK ON THE BOAT IN CAROLINA!

We're back in Carolina and catching up on our blogging. See the next several posts for what we have been up to for the past couple of weeks ....

Charleston Waste Holding Tanks

The city of Charleston is very environmentally conscious and responsible.  Note that their local vessels are all equipped with holding tanks for their solid waste -

Tides, again

Back to Charleston Harbor.  Here are some more pictures of the extreme tides here:

Charleston

It was a great trip to California, and it is also good to be back "home" - that is, on our boat in Charleston Harbor.  The weather here is perfect - 60s and up to 70 (days), 50s at night.  Only occasional rain.  [We missed the heavy rains in Northern California. Barely.]

Lunch at the Seewee Diner

We stopped here on the drive back from Myrtle Beach to Charleston. This old roadside place has a lot of history and good food!
It's named for the Seewee tribe of Native Americans - about 100 of them (really a large family rather than a tribe).  They were here when the HMS Carolina arrived, the first ship from England to Carolina. After trading with the non-native Americans, they decided to cut out the middlemen and trade directly with the king of England.  The able-bodied men tried to take their goods by canoe to England - but only made it a little way out into the Atlantic Ocean before they were wiped out in a storm.  The survivors (women, the old and the young, who stayed on shore) were subsequently taken into slavery and moved to the Caribbean where they died of diseases.  True story - we read it on the menu!

Sextant

Bob got a wonderful gift for Chanukah from the California Roudas - a sextant!  Just what we really need for celestial navigation.  Won't need the chartplotter or GPS anymore, and I don't have to change the batteries.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!
How do you work this thing?

Thanksgiving trip to California

We went to Berkeley, for turkey and visits with our grandkids, their parents, my brothers and their families, and assorted other friends and relatives.
