on the Hudson, from Marlboro to Croton

We left Marlboro (across from Wappy Falls, just south of Poughkeepsie, where we lived in 1966-67) early, and made it into Croton-on-Hudson at noon. 

The storm was supposed to be in the afternoon. We left Marlboro (south of Poughkeepsie) early in the AM, figured to get into port in Croton by noon. We did. Wasn't bad until the last 1-1/2 hours, after we cleared Peekskill and turned south into the open Haverstraw Bay (and the Tappan Zee) - with semi-infinite fetch and wind now decides to get into the upper 20s.

We are a sailboat again

Motored down the Hudson River, past Albany NY.  Big, wide, tide, current, huge ships.

Mast is up now. What a chore! Castleton on Hudson do it yourself. 

Two sailors helped us; took all day. 

Bouncy, bouncy! Docks bouncing. Boat bouncing. Crew bouncing. Exhausted! 

Main, boom, rodkicker, mainsail and most lines on now. Genoa tomorrow, plus final tighten, cotter pins and sail tape. 

Big job!

A visit from Paul and Beth

Paul and Beth Rouda [he's my first cousin who we haven't seen in 20 years] made a surprise visit today in Waterford. They are from Toledo, OH, and were in Albany, NY, with Beth's siblings. Had a wonderful day sharing history and family updates.


They have been following our Blog, and it turned out that we were only about 10 minutes away from each other (by car, theirs) last night. So, we got to do groceries and West Marine today - by car!

We never know how the day is going to turn out.  Just hanging loose and seeing what will happen ...

Mast Stepping

Tomorrow, Ihana becomes a sailboat again! We are putting up the mast in Castleton-on-the-Hudson, about 1-1/2 hours south down the Hudson River. We will use the Castleton Boat Club's gin pole. And so the next part of the journey starts. 

About 5 sailboats docked here at Waterford, NY [east end of the Erie Canal on the Hudson], heading down the river to also put up their masts and re-rig their boats. Lots more room inside - and on deck - with the sails and spars up and not stored. 

We have connected to Tom Lee from Ontanagon, MI, (s/v Windsong II), to help each other out on the mast-raising part.

Reunion on the Hudson

When we got to Waterford, NY today (end of Erie Canal & Mohawk River; junction with Hudson River), we ran into several boats we have seen before and have been leapfrogging with down the Canal:  Sailboats from Ontanagon and Ann Arbor (all heading for FL & Bahamas), motorboat also headed to FL.  And got e-mail & photos from sailboat from Toronto that is now a day or 2 ahead of us.  Most of us are here for the night at the Waterford City Dock.
